Reverend Valerie Lewis       An Inspirational LeaderDuring Vacation Bible School of June, 2005, the women of New Salem Baptist Church participated in a bible study dedicated to women for the purpose of nurturing women.  The study began with a topic “Weeding Out My Attitude Now”  and upon completion "Waiting On My Anointing Now” —  both are acronyms for WOMAN.  The labor was induced and with much travail, came the birthing of this women’s ministry.  After much prayer, the name ‘Bride of Christ’ came forth taken from Revelation 19:7:  “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come and His wife hath made herself ready."  Recognizing that the name Bride of Christ is really the Church that Jesus is coming back for inspired the women to become models on how a bride's character and lifestyle should be executed.  The women decided to become models of how the bride’s character and life should be executed in the natural as well as spiritual.  So far, our First-Friday night meetings have concentrated on studies that will and have helped each woman to see progress and spiritual growth in herself.  We began with a study on the ministry of prayer along with prayer and fasting.  In addition, we studied the principles of “When I’m On My Knees Devotional Thoughts on Prayer for Women,” written by Anita Corrine Donihue, where the words “what a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer” became a true reality to all who were hungry and thirsty. Our field trip to the Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim, Cranford, NJ, broaden our knowledge of the Torah and the use of the Menorah, which was expounded by the Interfaith Ministries’ educator who also gave explanation on the use of the ‘Prayer Shawl.’  One of our goals is to visit the ‘Holy Land’ in the near future.  Our present study has unfolded the closeness of Jesus with the twelve apostles during His three-year ministry.  Microscoping their attitudes, likes and dislikes, is proving to be quite interesting to say the least. This year marks our Fifth Annual Women in W.H.I.T.E. (Wisdom – Humility – Integrity – Truth – Endurance) taken from Ecclesiastes 9:8  “Let thy garments be always white, and thy head lack no ointment."  We are truly striving to be the ‘Bride of Christ’  that Jesus is coming back to get.
